SUMMARY:Professor Mogamat Rushdie Hendricks
DESCRIPTION:Optimization of Function and Aesthetics on Reconstructing Post-surgical Defects (Tumors) using Transport Distraction Osteogenesis– Session 4\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Mogamat Rushdie Hendricks \n\n\n\nA Visionary in Maxillofacial and Reconstructive Surgery \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Mogamat Rushdie Hendricks is a distinguished maxillofacial and oral surgeon with over 40 years of experience in clinical practice\, research\, and academia. He is an Adjunct Professor in Plastic\, Reconstructive\, and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and a globally recognized innovator in surgical techniques for maxillofacial reconstruction\, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)\, and head and neck oncology.A pioneer in his field\, Prof. Hendricks completed his PhD at UCT\, where his groundbreaking work on curvilinear transport distraction osteogenesis revolutionized the reconstruction of extensive post-maxillectomy defects. His research has led to patented medical devices\, including a tongue suspension implant for OSA\, which has received international recognition. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades\, including a Fellowship of the Royal Society of South Africa and his recent election as a councilor to the Royal Society of South Africa (2025-2026). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime converter at worldtimebuddy.comTime converter at worldtimebuddy.com\n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond his research\, Prof. Hendricks is a dedicated educator\, having mentored countless undergraduate and postgraduate students worldwide. He is an international course faculty member for the AO Foundation\, instructing in advanced surgical techniques. His commitment to education\, innovation\, and community service—including pro bono surgical care for underserved populations—has cemented his legacy in maxillofacial surgery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Lecture: \n\n\n\nBone has a significant capacity for repair and regeneration following injury or surgery\, involving complex interactions between cells\, growth factors\, and the extracellular matrix. Repair restores tissue continuity without increasing bone volume\, while regeneration generates new bone\, increasing skeletal tissue volume. Distraction Osteogenesis( DO) is a controlled surgical technique that uses mechanical strain to stimulate bone regeneration. It is used to treat post-surgical defects\, non-healing fractures\, osteomyelitis\, alveolar bone loss\, and congenital skeletal deformities. Maxillo-mandibular defects resulting from tumor resection present profound challenges in both function and aesthetics\, especially in the post-chemo-irradiation phase. Traditional reconstructive techniques\, such as revascularized free fibula flaps (RFFF)\, remain the gold standard but have limitations\, particularly in replicating the natural curvature of the mandible\, maxilla and palatal vault. The advent of Curvilinear Transport Distraction Osteogenesis (CTDO) has revolutionized Maxillo-mandibular reconstruction by enabling controlled bone regeneration along a curved trajectory\, restoring both form and function. \n\n\n\nCTDO builds on the principles of DO  but innovates through tetrafocal distraction and hybridized transport disk technology. This technique overcomes challenges posed by traditional RFFF\, including poor alveolar height\, compromised vestibular depth\, and inadequate peri-implant support. By eliminating the “rubber band effect\,” which previously restricted bone regeneration to linear paths\, CTDO ensures predictable and stable outcomes. Clinical and radiological evaluations confirm that this approach provides a reliable alternative for complex maxilla-mandibular reconstructions\, yielding high-quality bone with adequate density for implant placement. This presentation will highlight the biological basis\, surgical methodology\, and clinical outcomes of CTDO\, demonstrating its superiority over conventional techniques. By integrating biomechanics\, regenerative principles\, and advanced surgical engineering\, CTDO enhances patient outcomes and expands the reconstructive possibilities in oral and maxillofacial surgery\, improving the quality of life for patients requiring extensive Maxillo-mandibular rehabilitation.

Given that most elderly individuals present with comorbid conditions\, understanding how these complexities impact dental care is essential. \n\n\n\nThis lecture will introduce an accessible\, practical algorithm designed specifically for assessing medical risks in elderly dental patients. Attendees will learn a systematic approach to: \n\n\n\n\nThorough Patient Investigation\n\nComprehensive review of medical and dental histories.\n\n\n\nIdentification and management of dental anxiety.\n\n\n\nClinical examination strategies\, including inspection of the oral cavity\, head and neck region\, and other exposed areas.\n\n\n\nEffective observation techniques and interpreting vital signs.\n\n\n\nCollaboration and communication strategies with physicians.\n\n\n\n\n\nPhysical Status Evaluation (ASA Classification)Understand the significance of the ASA Physical Status (PS) Classification System\, with special attention to elderly patients. Approximately 25% of elderly patients aged 65–74 and about 33% of those over 74 fall into ASA Class III or IV\, indicating moderate to significant medical risks. Awareness of these classifications directly correlates to reducing morbidity and mortality rates.\n\n\n\nOral Risk Assessment (ORA)Evaluate dental procedure risks based on the type\, extent\, and duration of treatments required. Grasping how dental interventions impact medical risks is crucial to formulating a safe treatment strategy.\n\n\n\n\nBy integrating the ASA Physical Status with Oral Risk Assessment\, practitioners can accurately determine the overall medical risk\, guiding decisions on whether procedures can safely occur in the office or require hospital referrals. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us to master this essential clinical skill\, enhance patient safety\, and confidently manage dental treatments in elderly patients with complex medical backgrounds.
