Professor W.M. Tilakaratne is a globally recognized oral pathologist and a leading authority in oral cancer and precancer research. He is currently affiliated with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. With an extensive academic career spanning over three decades, he has held esteemed positions, including Professor of Oral Pathology at Queen Mary University of London, former Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and past president of the International Association of Oral Pathologists.
Stanford University lists Professor Tilakaratne among the top 2% of world scientists. He has made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of oral potentially malignant disorders. His research is widely referenced, with over 160 scientific publications and an H-index of 41. He has also played a pivotal role in global oral pathology advancements, serving as an editor for the WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours and the IARC Handbook on Oral Cancer.
