Overview:

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) continues to challenge clinicians and researchers, not just because of its chronic, progressive nature but because of the complex cellular reprogramming that drives it. Among the most critical players in this transformation are the mitochondria — the engines of cellular metabolism and resilience.

In this session, Dr. Karishma Desai will take participants inside the mitochondrial changes that influence fibroblast behavior in OSF. The discussion will highlight how shifts in mitochondrial fission–fusion balance contribute to myofibroblast differentiation, the molecular signals involved, and the investigative tools used to study these changes. The goal is to provide a sharper mechanistic understanding that can support better research, diagnosis, and potential therapeutic direction.

📅 Date: 25 November
⏰ Time: 18:00–19:00 IST
🎙 Speaker: Dr. Karishma Desai, Postdoctoral Fellow, Tokyo Dental College

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize mitochondrial alterations associated with myofibroblast differentiation in OSF.
  2. Understand mitochondrial fission–fusion dynamics and their cellular impact.
  3. Identify commonly used methods to investigate mitochondrial changes.

About the Speaker

Dr. Karishma Desai

Postdoctoral Fellow at Tokyo Dental College

Dr. Karishma Desai is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Tokyo Dental College, working at the intersection of oral pathology and molecular cell biology. Her research focuses on mitochondrial dynamics, fibrosis pathways, and the cellular mechanisms underlying oral potentially malignant disorders. With a strong foundation in translational research and a growing international footprint, she brings clear, thoughtful insight into the molecular drivers of OSF.
