A Pathologist Who Taught Us to Think Beyond the Microscope

Founder & Director, Oral Pathology 360
Dr. Anita Borges passed away yesterday — a sudden heart attack took from us one of the most remarkable figures in Indian pathology.
From my postgraduate days to countless programs she graced, her presence always raised the bar — with her clarity, compassion, and unflinching commitment to excellence. She reminded us that a diagnosis is not the end, but the beginning of seeking treatment and hope — just as every birthday is celebrated despite knowing life’s finiteness.
There are many memories of her — one stands out vividly. At an event we had organized to honour living legend Dr. Sarosh Shroff, she was the guest speaker. When she presented him the award, she was so genuinely happy for the honour he was receiving that she broke into a spontaneous hug. It was one of those rare moments that showed the warmth behind her formidable intellect.
Her Journey and Achievements:
- Consultant histopathologist at SL Raheja Hospital, Mumbai
- Director, Centre for Oncopathology, Wadala
- Over four decades in diagnostic histopathology and oncology
- Featured on The Pathologist Power List (2015 and 2022)
- Recipient of the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Society of Head and Neck Oncologists (2022)
- Described in the award citation as “a pathologist who thinks like a surgeon,” — a phrase she deeply cherished as the daughter of a cancer surgeon
Her journey reflected a rare blend of technical brilliance, clinical insight, and deep humanity — a combination that made her not only respected but deeply loved.

A Mentor and a Force of Nature
Her students describe her as a mentor who poured her heart and soul into pathology.
She often told her residents:
“Work like a pathologist, but think like a clinician.”
Her sharp mind, wit, and clarity were matched by her generosity. She never hesitated to share knowledge and was known for pushing everyone around her to rise to their best. She had the rare ability to correct without diminishing, to demand excellence while nurturing confidence.
What She Leaves Behind
What made her extraordinary wasn’t just her knowledge — it was her perspective.
She believed a diagnosis was not an end, but the beginning of a journey toward treatment and hope. She reminded us that pathology is not just about naming a disease, but about holding a patient’s story gently while doing so with precision.
“A good description starts the whole process of a diagnosis… it’s about making observations and then interpreting those observations.”
Dr. Anita Borges

Closing Reflection
“Rest in peace” feels almost out of place for someone so vibrant, so alive in spirit.
Instead, may her passion, humility, and courage continue to guide us — to see more clearly, judge more wisely, and care more deeply.
Thank you, Dr. Borges, for showing us how to be better pathologists and better human beings.
